This project highlights Coastal Tech’s expertise in complex beach nourishment and dune restoration projects. Unlike typical nourishment projects that utilize offshore borrow areas, this effort relied on an upland sand source transported to the site by truck haul. Coastal Tech designed and permitted the project within a short timeframe, successfully navigating environmental constraints associated with nearshore hardbottom resources and logistical challenges related to limited access and staging areas. Much of the fill material was transported through a private oceanfront community, requiring careful coordination throughout construction.
Coastal Tech provided planning, design, permitting, construction administration, and is providing post-construction monitoring services.
To offset damage caused by Hurricanes Ian and Nicole, Indian River County implemented a dune restoration project designed to return the dune system to its pre-storm condition. To avoid potential impacts to nearshore hardbottom habitat and eliminate the need for nearshore hardbottom monitoring typically required for beach nourishment projects, sand placement was limited to areas landward of the existing Mean High Water Line.
